If last year was unanimously consolidated as "the best year of Spanish cinema" in decades, this year has broadened its diversity without lowering the level. It has been really complicated to choose which six titles would make up an ideal still photo of what have been the first feature films of this year. Being in Complvtvm and in our most literary edition, we could not help but think of Horace, and make up our cinematic locus amoenus with a spirit of golden meanness and well loaded with languages and accents. As always, we have included those directors who shone as short filmmakers in ALCINE before jumping to feature films. So did Laura Ferrés and Álvaro Gago, who shared awards at ALCINE 47 with Los desheredados and Matria or Estíbaliz Urresola, winner of our last edition with Cuerdas and today triumphant with her 20.000 especies de abejas, winner in Malaga and finalist in the representation of Spain in the OSCARs. The look at childhood continues but travels to the other side of the country in Matar cangrejos, by Omar Razzak, set in that Tenerife unnoticed to the eyes of the tourist, and grows to adolescence in Heavies Tendres, by illustrator Juanjo Saez, who tenderly recalls his years as a fan of Metallica and Iron Maiden. Completing the journey are Victor Iriarte, selected in the 2006 and 2007 editions with his shorts Wrócic and Decir adios and who has premiered at the Venice Film Festival with Sobretodo de noche, a unique crime film starring Ana Torrent and Lola Dueñas, and Antier Noche, by Alberto Martín Menacho, from Alcalá, who, after his short film Mi amado, las montañas, expands his particular vision of rural Extremadura, a hybrid between fiction and documentary that participated in Visions du Reel and San Sebastian and that, like the last four titles, we will be able to see at ALCINE some time before its release in commercial theaters.
