The
Teatro Salón Cervantes was crying out for movies. For quality and a breath of fresh air. It couldn’t live without it; nor could the stalwarts of the
Alcalá de Henares Cine Club. And now following the summer break this emblematic film club from Alcalá is back in the saddle again. The Cine Club welcomes a new season full of attractions with
ALCINE38 coming into view over the horizon for the middle of November.
The advance party of feature films to be screened in
September will be typical of the Cine Club. Motion pictures from exotic locations backed by the awards of prestigious international festivals, with dramas as the cornerstone of the setup. A threesome of films from Thailand, Italy and Brazil make up September’s program. Screenings kick off with
‘Wonderful town’ (
Aditya Assarat, 2007), followed by
‘Calm Chaos’ (
Antonello Grimaldi, 2008) and conclude with
‘Elite Squad’ (
José Padilha, 2007).
The Cine Club is scheduled to return on the 10th of September. The Teatro Salón Cervantes will open its doors for another year to enjoy the best auteur films.
‘Wonderful town’ will be screened on
Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th in our standard double sessions at 18:30 and 21:00. Written and directed by newcomer
Aditya Assarat, this 92 minute film is an
intense romantic drama. The consequences of the tsunami that devastated part of the South East Asian archipelago provide the backdrop for the story of the relationship between an architect from Bangkok and the owner of the only hotel still standing in a small Thai village. The film premiered in Spain on the 20th of June this year.
‘Calm Chaos’ is crafted in a different image, but still has a dramatic base. The leading role is played by charismatic actor
Nanni Moretti directed by
Antonello Grimaldi. It is an Italian-British drama based on a book by Sandro Veronesi, which can be seen on the
17th and 18th of September in the Teatro Salón Cervantes. Moretti plays Pietro Paladini, a high-powered executive in an audiovisual company who is recovering from the unexpected death of his wife. Everyone is amazed at his fortitude in the face of tragedy, when in reality Paladini has not recovered at all. A
powerful drama with lighter moments of dark humour aided by Moretti’s portrayal. It was entered in the official section at the last Berlin Festival.
The Cine Club makes its farewell to September on the
25th and 26th with the screening of the feature film that won the Golden Lion at the Berlinale. The Brazilian film,
‘Elite Squad’ takes the pulse of
police corruption in the country from within the day to day workings of one of the elite corps of the police. A squadron from the Battalion of Special Operations of the Police
(BOPE) operating in
Río de Janeiro. It’s a hard hitting film dotted with cruel violence that explores the dark underbelly of Brazil.
