Cine Club’s back in the Picture in September
The usual weekly double film sessions return halfway through the month
After the summer break,
Cine Club is back top of the bill of cultural activities in
Alcalá de Henares and true to its guiding principles.
Quality cinema, cult directors and refined topics characterize the feature films programmed each season. September will see another collection of films guaranteed to meet the demands of film buffs who regularly attend screenings at the
Teatro Salón Cervantes in the city. The most outstanding French film of 2008,
‘Séraphine’ is first up, followed by the latest offering from Gus Van Sant to reach Spanish billboards,
‘Paranoid Park’, and a horror film enclosed in a claustrophobic Nordic atmosphere,
‘Let the Right One In’.
Cine Club will get the ball running on
Wednesday the 16th of September with the screening of the feature film that garnered the most awards and praise in France in 2008. It
won seven Cesar awards, including
best film and best actress (Yolande Moreau).
‘Séraphine’ is a French-Belgian co-production depicting the life of a woman who was a
shepherdess, housewife and then painter before succumbing to insanity. A fascinating biography told elliptically, which explores a
memorable character. The portrayal of
Yolande Moreau in the role of Séraphine de Senlis was universally acclaimed. Séraphine lived between the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. It will be screened on the
16th and 17th of September, at
18:30 and 21:00 on both occasions.
The next film comes guaranteed by the name of its director.
Gus Van Sant is a filmmaker with a cult following who never leaves you feeling indifferent.
‘Paranoid Park’ was shot in 2007, but only reached Spanish cinemas this year.
‘Milk’ was brought out first, a biopic for which Sean Penn won the Oscar for best actor. Critics have described ‘Paranoid Park’ as the culmination of a
trilogy of films on violence following ‘Elephant’ and ‘Last Days’.
This time round, attention focuses on
Alex, an
adolescent skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard in one of the most troubled parks in
Portland. A
murky story produced employing a formal outline and language typical of the films of Van Sant. ‘Paranoid Park’ can be seen on the
23rd and 24th of September.
To bring September to a close, Cine Club will screen one of the most talked about films in recent times. It’s a
new, original and disturbing Swedish
reinterpretation of the vampire myth seen through the naïve eyes of a
twelve year old boy who is bullied at school and finds a refuge in the friendship he forms with his new neighbour.
‘Let the Right One In’ will be screened on the
30th of September and the 1st of October at the above-mentioned times.
